Pearl Harbor was made famous during the attack on December 7, 1941. This is what sent the United States into World War II and on the spot of the attack now stands a memorial for all who died in the attack. This is a very famous tourist attraction that has about 1,500,000 visitors a year.
Pearl Harbor is located on the south coast of the island Oahu. Here you will find the largest harbor in Hawaii. There are multiple museums to commemorate the historical event that took place here. The most popular being the USS Arizona memorial; this is the actual ship that was first hit during the attack. Roughly 1177 men died when the ship sank and are still on board today, you can see the ship perfectly in the clear blue water. A Pearl Harbor museum is also right next to the USS Arizona and headphones can be purchased for a virtual tour. The newly added USS Missouri Memorial and the Battleship Missouri are also a sight that must be seen.
Pearl Harbor also offers other attractions to see as well. There is the Admiral Clarey Bridge which connects the island of Oahu and Ford Island. The bridge is 4,700 feet long and was opened in 1998, before then Ford Island could only be accessed by ferry or aircraft. Ford Island was owned by Dr. Seth Porter Ford in the mid 1800s and was then bought by the military. The island became a naval base and airfield and to this day has plaques to honor the 18 battleships that were sunk during the Pearl Harbor attack.
